What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme, started by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk, geared to help readers and writers touch base and let them know what's up. If you want join in, you can find the link widget on Jaime's and Erin's blogs!

What I'm Reading

A lot of writing help books. I just finished an awesome book by K.M. Weiland titled Outlining Your Novel: Map Your Way to Success, I am not a plotter by nature, but this book has completely changed my opinion on outlines, and I've even used some of the techniques in the book to outline my current WIP. (This means I had to start over, but more on that on Monday during your regularly scheduled blog post).

In my fun reading, I just finished Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare. Like the first two books in the trilogy, it was fabulous and I loved it. She has this amazing talent with dialogue. I don't know how she does it, but it's always good! And the ending was satisfying no matter if you were on Team Will or Team Jem. No spoilers though!

What I'm Writing

I'm currently working on what is temporarily titled The Consequences of a Corpse. It sounds awfully grim, doesn't it? It's really not - at least I hope it won't be! It's an Urban fantasy about a type of Fae called a Fyglia. It's traditionally a protective Native American animal spirit, so I've tweaked it a bit and put my own spin on her to make her up to date and relatable. But that's all I can say for now!

What Inspires Me Right Now

A lot of music, like usual, especially 90's pop. That might have something to do with The Backstreet Boys concert I'm planning on going to this August. Along with that, I've been watching a lot of Bones and Supernatural, which I can definitely attribute at least some of the inspiration for my WIP to.

What Else I've Been Up To

Other than writing, I've been working and getting things around for my graduation party later in June. It's very involved and time consuming, so I've been putting it off, but I have a lot of scrapbooking to catch up on. Who knew 19 years of life would take up so much space? And pictures? My mom's been going a little crazy over the food too, but I'm crossing my fingers that everything will turn out okay.

Along with graduation party prep - I've been prepping for college! That huge step in life. I'm so excited though. I can't wait to go shopping for my dorm room, and for school supplies, and new clothes. It's the best adventure ever. I'm going in blind, so there's another adventure. I'm crossing my fingers for this one too, and hoping it doesn't turn out like the movie, The Roommate. But as long as I'm in the Honors dorm, I should be fine! (Maybe my roommate will be a little nerdy - but I'm okay with that because I'm a little nerdy too!)

So what's up with y'all this week? :)

  1. Congrats on graduating! I remember trying to narrow down my pictures for a graduation board/display. It's especially difficult if you have an entire time period of particularly horrible-looking snapshots. ;)
And yay for watching Supernatural! Bonus points for you. Sounds like some good inspiration for your WIP. :)

    1. Thank you! It's definitely a challenge. And I love Supernatural - I'm trying to re-watch every season Netflix has available this summer. (x

  2. I love the Infernal Devices series, but I still have yet to read my copy of CLOCKWORK PRINCESS. I'm not sure what's wrong with me because I've been waiting on that one for ages! So many people seem to love it, so that's exciting. How exciting that you're starting college this fall! College can be so much fun, and of course there's the opportunity to learn a ton. I kind of wish I could have a do-over. :-)

    1. It was a really great read. I had no idea how she would tie up the loose ends - but she did it with style and I can't think of any better way she could have ended it. I'm really hoping to make college an amazing experience, with lots of learning and fun at the same time! :)

  3. You think 19 years of life takes up space? Wait till you've had... um... more than twice that amount! ;) Seriously, though, all the best with the graduation party, and your college plans.

Since you're on a "writing help" books kick, and we've just met (hello!), I feel compelled to ask if you've read ON WRITING by Stephen King, and if you haven't, suggest you put it on the top of your to-read list. Just a suggestion. :D

    1. Haha that's why I was surprised! In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't seem like that long. And thank you! :)

I actually have and I really enjoyed it! Thanks for the suggestion though. I always welcome new books to add to my 'to read' list. :)

And it's nice to meet you!

You've got to love a good dose of 90s pop. It's my go to cheer up music!

  5. I really need to get to The Infernal Devices soon. I have the first two books, but my reading list is out of control right now. Your WIP sounds really unique! I haven't heard of anything else quite like that. It's always great to hear about new and creative ideas other writers are working on. Congratulations on graduating, and I hope you have a blast preparing for college!

    1. I know the feeling - so many good books, so little time! And thanks! I haven't found anything quite like it either, which is always exciting. And thank you! So far it's been amazing. :)

  6. Congrats on your recent graduation and all the wonderful opportunities ahead of you! The Infernal Devices are among my favorite books, Cassandra Clare is a master. I am also a HUGE Supernatural fan; it's always fun to find a fellow lover of Sam and Dean! Enjoy your summer and make the most of it! Life catches up with you faster than you'd think. :)

    1. Thank you so much! :) Sam and Dean are the best, along with CC. I bet, my senior year was about five seconds long, but thank you again. :)

  7. I am really bad at reading sequels. I read the first book in the Infernal Devices series but I haven't gotten around to the others. Will have to do that someday though.

And congrats on graduating! I graduated from high school last year, and the first thing I thought about when I moved into my dorm was The Roommate, which I watched a few months before leaving for college (not smart!). Luckily, my roommate was nice. Though she did drive me crazy at times, we got along. Hopefully, your roommate will be nice. :)

And I LOVE Supernatural so much. I can't get enough of that show. I spent last summer watching every season and...I can't wait for next season to start!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and good luck with writing/your first year of college.

    1. I definitely would if I were you - they're worth it!

And that's reassuring, hopefully I'll end up with someone like yours. :)

It seems like everyone loves Supernatural! Makes sense though - it's a great show. <3

      And thank you! :)
